Background Investigations are very unique assignments and require professional investigators that know how to apply your circumstances to do the right job. While basic investigative and research techniques are employed, the investigator must be highly skilled in assessing and analyzing information, as well as, developing and following leads. Alex Toia has designed a proven investigative method to conduct background investigations. Understanding your problem and properly preparing the investigation are the most essential elements of every assignment.

ATC analyzes your case history in order to design a plan to best suit your needs and budget. When this process is complete, an outline of everything that needs to be accomplished is printed and disseminated to staff. Specific responsibilities are given to the investigator or researcher most adept to effectively handle a specific part of the case. Everyone assigned to the investigation has the case history, understands the client’s goals and objectives, has specific roles, and directly reports to the senior investigator and case manager. This organizational system literally puts all of us on the same page.

During the investigation, there is regular communication between staff, and continual updates are directly input to our “Case Findings” computer file. As facts and data are checked off, new developments are added to the investigative outline to maintain top efficiency and organization. When enough information has accumulated, or when the budget limit has been reached, the Case Findings are simply pasted into the formal written report. Background Investigation Case:

Alleged Mob-Related Connections:

Outside counsel representing an insurance carrier was defending a 50 year old insured who was involved in a fist-fight at a local restaurant. The altercation developed because of “uncontrolled behavior” by several small children attending a family birthday party. Our client complained to the people at the next table, as well as to management, that the children were running wild, screaming, and throwing food. One of the party hosts, a six-foot five, athletic, thirty year old male, objected to the insured’s foul language and negative attitude when he spoke to the family.

The children were brought under control, but it was contended that the insured continued to make snide and disparaging remarks about the family. One of the younger men walked over to his table to ask if he had a problem. A heated verbal exchange ignited an attack with a beer mug. The seated man’s hands were pinned to the table while another thirty-something family member jumped in to punch the victim several times. Police from three towns responded.

Insinuations were made that the two younger men had mob connections and would be seeking revenge. An older woman at their table allegedly made references to underworld affiliations and retaliation.

ATC was hired to conduct full background investigations on all parties - the insured and his assailants - to find out what kinds of people the carrier was dealing with and if the mob allegations were true. Our lawyer wanted to know what propensities each person had in becoming embroiled in this altercation. The results were startling because after extensive research and profile development, nothing pointed to mob connections or activities. All evidence led to suspicions about the insured and his ability to deal with people.
