Professional Careers of Alexander Toia & Barbara Rudd

Alex Toia,
CCLA, LPI began his professional investigation career in 1973 while a graduate student at Rutgers University, School of Criminal Justice.  He worked part-time as an apprentice investigator for Hamilton Detective Agency, Livingston, NJ that specialized in matrimonial surveillances and missing persons.  In 1975, Alex was appointed to New Jersey’s newly created Pre-Trial Intervention Program, supervised by the Morris County Probation Department and Prosecutors Office.  Background and pre-sentence investigations, defendant and witness interviews, and extensive evaluations were routinely prepared for assistant prosecutors and criminal court judges.

After three years with Morris County, before Special Investigation Units were introduced to the insurance industry, Chubb Insurance Group offered Alex a unique field investigator position to expand its Claims and Litigation Departments.  For the next five years, Alex investigated all personal and commercial coverage lines, including motor vehicle claims, construction accidents, property and liability claims, personal injuries, natural and suspicious deaths, and premises liability cases.  He also completed a three-year Legal Insurance course at the American Educational Institute to earn the Special Designation of Casualty Claim Law Associate (CCLA), which gives him substantial knowledge of insurance-related litigation few investigators possess.

In 1982, Alex founded Search Investigations, Inc. and specialized in insurance claims, civil litigation, and criminal defense investigations.  Clients included insurance carriers, law firms, lawyers, private and public corporations, and self-insured groups throughout the New Jersey/New York Metropolitan area.

After 16 years of successful operation, Alex looked for greater, more complex challenges and merged his company with another investigative agency to form Murphy Toia Murphy, Inc.  After almost five years as the company’s Internal Operations Director, Alex decided to re-establish his own company where he would have full control of all internal and external operations, where he could truly make a positive difference in people’s lives.  Hence, Alexander Toia & Company, LLC was formed.

Barbara Rudd, Director of Research & Missing Persons Investigations, has been with Alex for more than seven years.  She is a former student of Sussex County Community College Paralegal Studies Program.  During her course studies, she conducted extensive research for Nancy Gallo, Esq., Director of Paralegal Studies at SCCC, who authored a Family Law text book.

At the law firms where Barbara was a paralegal, she became proficient in preparations of legal documents, such as motions, subpoenas, summons, legal correspondence, interrogatories, depositions, EUO's (Examinations Under Oath) and IME's (Independent Medical Examinations).  While attending SCCC, her curriculum followed ABA specifications and consisted of Legal Research and Writing, Civil Litigation, Business Law, Family Law, Workers Compensation, Estates and Trusts, and Criminal Law.  Paralegal work also trained Barbara in legal research.  With that foundation, she has trained and worked with noted Research Expert and author, Cynthia Hetherington.  With continuing education and daily on-the-job experience, Barbara has become highly skilled in database research, including Westlaw and Lexis Nexis, and the numerous data providers serving ATC.  Her most significant talent, however, is her ability to navigate the internet, identifying and locating information under layers of information.  She has become especially adept at teenage and young adult internet behavior having continuously tracked her teenage children’s surfing activities for several years.

Barbara received this designation based on her understanding of FCRA compliance requirements.
